Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze ¡°Hwang Woo Suk¡± related papers comparatively by using a semantic network analysis. Among diverse methods analyzing academic papers, this paper used keywords, because they can deliver author¡¯s intention exactly without distortion. For this purpose, 129 papers published between 2004 and 2015 were first collected by using Google Scholar, and then 81 papers with keywords were finally selected as objects of analysis.
Results of analysis including all papers show that Hwang_Scandal, Stem_Cell_Research and Stem_Cell ranked top three in terms of keyword frequency analysis. Degree centrality analysis provides that Hwang_Scandal occupied the first among Korean papers, while Research_Misconduct ranked the top among foreign papers. When papers were divided into two groups based on whether ¡°Hwang_Scandal¡± itself was a keyword or not, a group with ¡°Hwang_Scandal¡± listed Hwang_Scandal, Research_Misconduct, and Stem_Cell_Research as top three in degree centrality analysis, whereas a group without ¡°Hwang_Scandal¡± provided Research_Misconduct, Stem_Cell_Research, Ethics, and Bioethics. This paper also divided papers into two periods. Degree centrality analysis shows similar results in both periods: Research_Misconduct, Stem_Cell_Research and Hwang_Scandal appeared strong. However, it was also noticed that later period provided more diverse keywords than earlier period.
It is significant to analyze last 10 years¡¯ academic efforts systematically since Hwang Woo Suk scandal exploded. However, it should also be mentioned that this paper has some limitations such as the imperfection of search engine, the selection of those papers only written in English or Korean, and the exclusion of some papers without keywords. Furthermore, some words including ¡°authorship¡± are not selected as keywords in this paper, although they have received a great attention during the Hwang scandal, which requires a separate in-depth analysis in the future.
